Gemstones and their origins

It’s interesting to see, at least that’s my point of view, what form the gemstones had before they became your jewelry.
Let’s have a look:

Amethyst

handmade bracelets natural gemstones, natural stone bracelet, italian style jewelry,Made In Italy ,handmade bracelets
Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz. The name comes from the Koine Greek ἀμέθυστος amethystos from ἀ- a-, “not” and μεθύσκω methysko / μεθύω methyo, “intoxicate”, a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. The ancient Greeks wore amethyst and carved drinking vessels from it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication.
Mining: USA, UK, Canada, Brasil, Mexico, Russia, Sri Lanka, Uruguay Africa orientale, Siberia, India.

Historical and cultural references: Amethyst was used as a gemstone by the ancient Egyptians and was largely employed in antiquity for intaglio engraved gems. The Greeks believed amethyst gems could prevent intoxication, while medieval European soldiers wore amethyst amulets as protection in battle in the belief that amethysts heal people and keep them cool-headed. Beads of amethyst were found in Anglo-Saxon graves in England. Anglican bishops wear an episcopal ring often set with an amethyst, an allusion to the description of the Apostles as “not drunk” at Pentecost in Acts 2:15.

Botswana Agate

handmade bracelets natural gemstones, natural stone bracelet, italian style jewelry,Made In Italy ,handmade bracelets
Named for the area in Africa where it is mined, Botswana Agate is called the Sunset Stone because it retains sunlight and comforts people through dark, lonely nights. The volcanic activity that produced these lovely stones dates back nearly 187 million years ago, and though the igneous stones of Botswana began as volcanic flow, they did not originate from normal, mountainous volcanoes. Rather the lava flowed in waves from long faults along the lower rock layers and rolled across the landscape, depositing layer upon layer of Silica/Quartz, creating the extra fine banding and patterns which make Botswana Agates highly unique and desirable.
Mining: Botswana.

Agate promotes inner stability, composure, and maturity. Its warm, protective properties encourage security and self-confidence. It is a great crystal to use during pregnancy.

Agate is useful as a protection amulet when traveling, and is especially effective against traffic accidents.

Blue Sea Sediment a.k.a. Sea Sediment Jasper is only one of the names for this absolutely gorgeous stone that is also referred to as: “Aqua Terra Jasper” (the blue & green colors), “Impression Jasper” (for it does make quite the impression), “Snakeskin Jasper”, as well as “Variscite” and “Regalite”. This stone has proven to be somewhat of a mystery. We know that it is a natural jasper material from Africa that has a somewhat jelly-like lustre resembling Natural Turquoise– but no one in the market knows what exactly to call it yet!

Mining: Ocean Jasper is mined in Madagascar, the only place on earth, near the town of Marovato (Marovato). Throughout the North-West coast of the island, after many years of futile search, this extremely original mineral would be found in the root.

Blue Striped Onyx Agate

Agate and onyx are two different names given to varieties of chalcedony. Blue agate is found in nature, but is often dyed as well. Its appearance can vary from barely bluish-white to nearly cobalt. It can be banded, or appear uniformly milky. Blue agate is almost always cut “en cabochon”, meaning with a smooth polish. Faceting is uncommon, as the translucent to opaque material doesn’t play light through facets like clear stones.

Mining: Agate mines are found almost everywhere in the world. But some of the more important mines are found in USA, Russia, Europe and Canada.

Historical and cultural references: It has a long history of use for hardstone carving and jewelry, where it is usually cut as a cabochon or into beads. It has also been used for intaglio and hardstone cameo engraved gems, where the bands make the image contrast with the ground. Some onyx is natural but much of the material in commerce is produced by the staining of agate.
Onyx was used in Egypt as early as the Second Dynasty to make bowls and other pottery items. Use of sardonyx appears in the art of Minoan Crete, notably from the archaeological recoveries at Knossos.

Chrysanthemum Fossil Coral

handmade bracelets natural gemstones, natural stone bracelet, italian style jewelry,Made In Italy ,handmade bracelets
Fossil coral is a natural type of gemstone formed by ancient corals. The proper name for fossil coral is ‘agatized coral’ or ‘agatized fossil coral’, because during formation, the coral remains are gradually replaced with agate, a variety of naturally occurring chalcedony, or microcrystalline quartz. When prehistoric corals are fossilized through replacement with agate, the fossil coral forms through hardened deposits left by silica-rich waters. The entire process can take over 20 million years and occurs only under very unique geological conditions. Corals are marine animals and it is their skeletons that are fossilized and preserved, often leaving flower-like patterns in the stone.
Mining: Indonesia, USA (Florida and Georgia).

Historical and cultural references: Since the beginning of the 1st millennium, coral has been highly prized as a gem because it was believed to have mysterious, powerful and sacred properties. The Gauls often used coral gems as ornamentation for their helmets and weapons, believing that it was a protective stone. Ancient Egyptians also placed coral in tombs of the deceased to protect against evil spirits because they believed each coral gem actually contained divine blood.

Hematite is a dark, blackish gray opaque stone with a metallic luster. It has an extremely high brilliance and shine and takes a metallic polish that can look silver, pure black, or gunmetal blue. Hematite rates a 6.5 on the hardness scale. Thick crystals are suitable for cutting into gemstones. It is popular for jewelry, however because of its high density, pieces can be heavy. Hematite is used for ornamental pieces, as well as fashioning into necklace beads, pendants and rings.

Hematite Crystal, The hematite properties and uses are very grounding, stabilizing and protective, making it one of the most powerful crystals for meditation. Hematite is colored black to steel or silver-gray, brown to reddish brown, or red. It is mined as the main ore of iron. Varieties include kidney ore, martite (pseudomorphs after magnetite), iron rose and specularite (specular hematite). While the forms of hematite vary, they all have a rust-red streak. Hematite is harder than pure iron, but much more brittle.

Mining: Gray hematite is typically found in places that can have still standing water or mineral hot springs, such as those in Yellowstone National Park in North America. The spectral signature of hematite was seen on the planet Mars by the infrared spectrometer on the NASA Mars Global Surveyor (“MGS”) and 2001 Mars Odyssey spacecraft in orbit around Mars.

Historical and cultural references: Hematite gets its name from a Greek word meaning blood-like because of the color of its powder. Ancient superstition held that large deposits of hematite formed from battles that were fought and the subsequent blood that flowed into the ground. Crystals of Hematite are considered rare and are sought after by collectors as are fine Kidney Ore specimens.

Howlite

Howlite, a calcium borosilicate hydroxide (Ca2B5SiO9(OH)5), is a borate mineral found in evaporite deposits. Howlite was discovered near Windsor, Nova Scotia in 1868 by Henry How (1828–1879), a Canadian chemist, geologist, and mineralogist.[5][6] How was alerted to the unknown mineral by miners in a gypsum quarry, who found it to be a nuisance. He called the new mineral silico-boro-calcite; it was given the name howlite by James Dwight Dana shortly thereafter.

Mining: Canada, Los Angeles, USA.

Lava stone is easily the oldest and most frequently found stone in the world; hence, it’s used by nearly an endless amount of cultures. Lava stone literally comes from the core of the earth- fiery brimstone that bubbles to the surface and cools. Once the stone is cool, it becomes porous and black, creating the beautiful black color so many have come to love. This is known as basalt, and can mostly be found in the ocean.

Mining: Hawaii.

Historical and cultural references: An Italian superstition holds that sapphires are amulets against eye problems, and melancholy.
A traditional Hindu belief holds that the sapphire causes the planet Saturn (Shani) to be favorable to the wearer.
The Greek term for sapphire quite likely was instead used to refer to lapis lazuli.
During the Medieval Ages, European lapidaries came to refer to blue corundum crystal by “sapphire”, a derivative of the Latin word for blue: “sapphirus”.

Sapphires have been prized as great gemstones since 800BC. Rulers of ancient Persia believed the sky was painted blue by the reflection of sapphire stones. And a great poet once described the sapphire as “the blue of a clear sky just minutes after sundown.” Blue sapphires were a holy stone to the catholic church and to Ancient Persians, who believed they made the sky blue with their reflections. To some religions, the blue color of the sapphire represents the heavens. Sapphires are stones of the apocalypse, and ancient lore held that the tablets upon which the Ten Commandments were written, were actually sapphire. This has to mean that either the script was very tiny, or the sapphire was made by the hands of someone other than mother earth, as its size would have had to have been quite adequate!
