Hawk eye

Hawk eye is a chatoyant gemstone that is usually a metamorphic rock with a dark blue colour and a silky lustre.
Pseudomorph of compact Quartz after the fibrous mineral Crocidolite, with a chatoyant sheen, very similar to Tiger’s Eye.
Mining: South Africa.
Historical and cultural references: In the Middle Ages the Hawk Eye was carried as a charm against spells, demons, the evil eye, there is also the belief that mineral fiber Asbestos; reminiscent of an eye, are effective for eye diseases.

Obsidian Black

Obsidian is produced when felsic lava extruded from a volcano cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth. It is commonly found within the margins of rhyolitic lava flows known as obsidian flows, where the chemical composition (high silica content) induces a high degree of viscosity and polymerization of the lava.
Mining: Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Australia, Canada, Chile, Georgia, Greece, El Salvador, Guatemala, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Scotland, Turkey and the United States.
Historical and cultural references: Obsidian was valued in Stone Age cultures because, like flint, it could be fractured to produce sharp blades or arrowheads. Like all glass and some other types of naturally occurring rocks, obsidian breaks with a characteristic conchoidal fracture. It was also polished to create early mirrors.

Tiger’s Eye

Tiger’s eye is a chatoyant gemstone that is usually a metamorphic rock with a golden to red-brown colour and a silky lustre. As members of the quartz group, tiger’s eye and the related blue-coloured mineral hawk’s eye gain their silky, lustrous appearance from the parallel intergrowth of quartz crystals and altered amphibole fibres that have mostly turned into limonite.

Mining: South Africa and Western Australia.

Historical and cultural references: In some parts of the world, the stone is believed to ward off the evil eye.
